Baldies' Blog began originally in the UK by a 26 year old journalist with a blood cancer on a mission to inform the world about bone marrow donation.

He has since died, and I took on the cause of making cancer care more transparent for everybody.

Cancer is a disease that will touch everybody through diagnosis or affiliation: 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed and 1 in 3 woman will hear those words, "You Have Cancer."

I invite you to read how I feel along my journey and
how I am continuing to live a full life alongside my Hodgkin's lymphoma, with me controlling my cancer, not my cancer controlling me.

I hope that "Baldies' Blog" will prepare you to handle whatever life sends you, but especially if it's the message, "You Have Cancer."

Fight ‘O Nutrients

It takes ten years and 800 million dollars for a drug company to bring ONE new medication to market.
Yes, all those meds you see the ads for, the lunesta, humira, prilosec OTC, they all average out to costing 800 million dollars to create.
From a business perspective, how are you going to get a return on your investment (ROI) for that much money!
Damn.
But they do, and that’s why the pharmaceutical industry keeps thriving, because they have big money from big profits.
Zofran, a well touted anti-emetic for chemotherapy induced nausea, is among these.
And you know what?
A single 30 pill “as needed” script would cost me out of pocket a whopping $749 dollars.
That’s because it’s SPECIAL, created specifically for chemotherapy patients, and if you have that serious of a medical problem, then you are willing to pay that inabsorbanent amount.
I have. You would too.
Thank goodness for what insurance will provide.
But you’ll never see all the research and development that was put into zofran put into ginger, which has long been known to have anti-nausea qualities.
Ginger is not patentable. It’s available everywhere.
If you’re in the right place, with the right climate, and the right soil, you could grow it yourself.
No company is ever going to extend 800 million dollars into researching something it can’t own.
Very simple case and point. This is why alternatives aren’t so readily researched.
I thought it was a conspiracy theory when I heard it.
I thought “Oh no, that can’t be true, everybody really wants a cure.”
Lots of people want a cure, but then they want to find more cures and more medications for symptom management and then they want to pay their scientists and sales reps, and yes, they make a profit, because while you’re out saving the world you should at least live the good life. Right?
Wrong.
That’s where greed comes in. There is no space for that with me.
Many workers do this under the guise that they are not contributing to the gross public health problem America is experiencing.
I’m just saying, If you’re not part of the solution you’re part of the problem.
Choose your side. You can’t play for both teams on this one.
I’m going with the phytonutrients for now. I saw “Fight, oh nutrients, fight.”
The theory of these is based on a combination of ancient Eastern medicines.
It is also an accepted scientific fact that these nutrients aid in the battle of all sorts of disorders, including cancer and autoimmune diseases.
But we’re not seeing any serious commercials for carrots.
Those I could grow in the ground myself.
Just because it’s not seen on tv doesn’t mean it’s an extremely useful tool in the fight against disease, it just means nobody owns it so nobody can make money off it so nobody is going to advertise its benefits.
Is everybody following me here?
I hope so. I’m getting on one of those rampage rolls where I’m thinking, thinking, thinking, and not sure if I’m making a whole complete thought.
Anyway, The Zakim Center, at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, is dedicated to assisting patients with the scientifically proven complementary measures to ward off cancer.
I’m signing up. I all ready have. I got my massage there. I received nutrition counseling. Now I’m collaborating the whole picture to bring all I’ve learned together.
I’m only eating good, healthy food that only comes from the earth and not through a processing center.
That’s basically all they tell you to do.
I’m a farm girl.
I can go back to my roots (HAHA).
I think the combination of the therapies I’ve chosen, my naturopathic german regimen, my diet which focuses on anti-inflammatory action (inflammation is a serious concern in cancer. It may cause reoccurrences!) in conjunction with staying with my current medical provider’s suggestions, I should be good.
At the very least, I’ll feel good, and that’s a good enough goal for me.

Where might we find information about the particular anti-inflammatory diet that you are on? I would think that is something we should all seriously consider.

In 1990, my sister and I took her husband, my brother-in-law, to Sloan-Kettering, a huge cancer hospital in New York. He was suffering from a brain tumor, the same cancer that had killed my father five years earlier. We did not receive a good prognosis there, and in fact, Michael died about six months later.

But I remember thinking at the time that cancer was a huge business, and that if a cure were to be found, a lot of people would be out of work. That seemed so callous to me, but I have to admit, I have had that feeling ever since.

I also learned since that time that Chatham County has a very high incidence of brain cancers. Evidently, although no one would ever admit it publically, there is probably a connection to the nuclear power plant upriver from us. I do know that the safety regulations now are much more strictly enforced than they were at that time.

Who knows? I don't think we ever get the exact truth from any of these people.

So, Hillary, I really am happy to see you researching your options and fighting back against the system...and...keeping us informed and thinking.

I'm intested in not only the thinking that you generate in me but also in the variety of options that you are uncovering that many of us might not have considered or known are available - things that can apply to all of us. Thanks for lighting another way.
